To Plant a Seed is to Make a Promise

This is the feeling of the moment.  It’s cold, it’s gray but you get out there and work the soil between cloudy days and rain storms.  You delicately place the seed, cover to give it the protection it needs and you make a promise to take care of it through its lifetime.  One of the reasons we chose this life was the gratification that come with having this kind of relation with a living thing.  I don’t know anything like working nature that gives you such instant satisfaction.  You use what you read in a book or hear from a neighbor and hope for the best.  It doesn’t ask you for a password or make you pay, it’s you and nature and whatever happens, happens.

The results are more often than not satisfactory and whether the plant thrives or not, you always learn something.  Anyone who has grown something themselves, knows how happy and proud we feel watching life unfold knowing that we played a part.

So, sitting here at my desk on a cold day of March I feel satisfied but also aware that I am making a promise to this seed.  To all of my seeds.  Seeing that we were in America for two months with the idea to stay throughout the year, being back in Sardinia, planting these seeds, means I am making a promise.  A promise to them, a promise to my land to stay and work through the harvest season in the long spring and hot summer.  It’s a promise to my family to stay here and live this self sufficient life.

In an uncertain time, we feel called to continue to believe in the value of planting seeds and being stewards of the Earth.  For us, this is the best way to go forward and make a change in the world around us.  Through Country Living School people come and learn about how to start their own project, to plant their own seed and acquire the skills they need to live self sustainably.  Our purpose grows just like the seeds we plant.
